Starting from March 4th, all aluminum products imported into the US will be subject to a 25% tariff under a new policy. This poses a major challenge for Vietnam's aluminum exporting enterprises, forcing them to adjust their business strategies to maintain competitiveness.
Currently, Vietnam's steel industry already faces high tariffs when exporting to the US, but for the aluminum industry, this decision increases the pressure as import duties rise from 10% to 25%. Businesses in the sector are concerned that export turnover to the US market will drop sharply, forcing them to seek new directions.
Each year, EuroHa JSC exports about $7 million worth of aluminum to the US. With the new tariff, the company predicts a significant decrease in export volume this year.
"We are coordinating with the Vietnam Aluminum Association and the Trade Remedies Authority to work with the US side. If the 25% tariff remains unchanged, the output of extruded aluminum profiles could decrease by about 30%."
According to the Vietnam Aluminum Association, exporting enterprises need to proactively develop response plans, from optimizing production costs to expanding export markets to other potential regions.
"Businesses need to proactively find reasonable supply sources and reduce production costs to maintain profit margins, while also diversifying markets to reduce dependence on the US."
As one of the leading suppliers of aluminum sheets and coils in Vietnam, H&D Steel LLC is also adjusting its business strategy to adapt to the new situation. The increased import tariff may lead to a rise in domestic aluminum consumption, creating opportunities for the company to expand its market share domestically and in the Southeast Asian region.
Furthermore, the European market and countries with free trade agreements with Vietnam are also seen as potential destinations for exported aluminum sheets and coils. H&D Steel LLC is strengthening its strategy to approach these markets to ensure stable growth.
Despite the difficulties, Vietnam's aluminum industry still has opportunities as domestic demand in the US cannot be immediately met by local production. However, the profit margins of exporting businesses will certainly be squeezed.
According to US Customs data, in 2024, Vietnam exported approximately $479 million worth of aluminum to this market, an increase of 9.5% compared to 2023. This shows that potential still exists, but businesses need to quickly adjust their strategies to take advantage of it.
The new tariff policy from the US is a major challenge for Vietnam's aluminum industry, but it is also an opportunity for businesses to restructure, optimize costs, and diversify markets. H&D Steel LLC, along with many other companies in the industry, is proactively seeking new directions to continue sustainable development in a volatile business environment.
