October 06, 2025 – Vedanta Ltd, India's leading mining and metals conglomerate led by Anil Agarwal, has announced a strategic investment plan of up to INR 13,226 crore (approximately USD 1.59 billion) to significantly expand its aluminium production capacity. This investment will boost Vedanta's aluminium capacity from the current 2.4 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) to 2.75 MTPA by Financial Year 2026 (FY26), and further to 3.1 MTPA by FY28. This move not only solidifies Vedanta's position in the global aluminium industry but also reflects the group's strategic vision to meet the surging demand from emerging industries and position aluminium as a key pillar of its revenue structure.
Vedanta's aluminium capacity expansion plan is a crucial part of the group's long-term growth strategy. The primary objective is to make aluminium the single largest contributor to the group-level EBITDA (Earnings Before Interest, Taxes, Depreciation, and Amortization), targeting 8-10 billion USD by FY28. This underscores Vedanta's confidence in the exceptional growth potential of the aluminium market amidst the global energy transition and infrastructure development.
The expansion will include BALCO, a majority-owned Vedanta subsidiary, which is set to join the 1 million tonne production capacity club. This growth is not just about volume but also about optimizing the value chain, from bauxite mining to finished aluminium production and value-added products.
Vedanta's decision to invest heavily in aluminium is driven by soaring demand from strategic industries:
Vedanta Aluminium is also actively addressing the growing demand for aluminium wire rods amid India's 5G infrastructure boom, demonstrating the group's adaptability and ability to capture market trends.
Beyond capacity expansion, Vedanta is also developing integrated Zinc and Aluminium Parks to foster industrial growth and employment. This is part of the group's broader vision to position itself as an innovation hub in the metals sector.
Notably, Vedanta is pursuing a restructuring strategy through structural demergers to become a pure-play metals business. This allows each business unit to focus more intently on specific growth strategies, optimize operational efficiency, and attract specialized investors. The separation of the aluminium segment will enable the group to concentrate resources and expertise on developing this area, maximizing its market potential.
Vedanta's substantial investment in aluminium is not merely a business move but also a significant indicator of confidence in India's economic growth and global demand for this metal. India is on track to become one of the world's largest economies, with robust "Make in India" initiatives and infrastructure development, creating a vast domestic market for aluminium.
However, capacity expansion also comes with challenges. Competition in the global aluminium market remains fierce, and factors such as energy prices, raw material costs, and environmental regulations can impact profitability. Vedanta will need to continue innovating technology and optimizing production processes to maintain its competitive edge.
Overall, Vedanta's plan demonstrates a long-term vision and strong commitment to the aluminium industry. By increasing capacity and focusing on value-added products, Vedanta is positioning itself to be a key player in the future of the metals sector, especially in the context of the transition to a green and digital economy.
