Aluminium sheet price, week 41/2026: SMM A00 drops to 23,650
Shanghai reopened after National Day with two down sessions: the SMM A00 aluminium in...
Aluminum tread plate, also known as checker plate, floor plate or diamond plate, is rolled aluminum sheet with a raised pattern on one face and a flat reverse. The pattern gives shoe soles and wheels a firmer grip, which is why it is used for truck beds, stair treads, lift floors and walkways in workshops. This guide helps you get three specifications right, since they decide both quality and cost: the alloy, the pattern and the thickness. It also lists the mistakes buyers make most often.

Quick guide to tread plate alloy and thickness by application (compiled by H&D Steel)
Two standards are referenced most often:
When you receive a mill certificate, check that the standard quoted on it covers the mechanical properties and tolerances of tread plate, not just the chemical composition.
Pattern height varies between mills. Impol (Slovenia) rolls 0.5 or 1.0 mm high patterns on 1.5 mm plate, 1.0 or 1.5 mm on 2 mm plate, and 1.5 mm on anything thicker than 2 mm. The distributor Alumeco uses an example with a 2.0 mm pattern. Higher bars grip better and lower bars are easier to clean, so always ask for the pattern height when you request a quote.
| Alloy | Key characteristics | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| 1050 / 1050A | Almost pure aluminum, soft and easy to form but low strength | Decorative cladding, skirting, low-load areas |
| 3003 | Aluminum–manganese, stronger than pure aluminum, easy to bend and weld, good corrosion resistance | Truck floors, stair treads, toolboxes, lift floors |
| 3105 | Aluminum–manganese with added magnesium (Mn 0.3–0.8%, Mg 0.2–0.8%) | Cladding, light floor linings, thin sheet parts |
| 5052 / 5754 | Aluminum–magnesium, stronger than the 3xxx group, good resistance to seawater and industrial air | Boat decks, vehicle floors and walkways in coastal areas |
| 6061-T6 | Heat-treated alloy, the hardest and most load-capable in this table, harder to bend tightly | Load-bearing floors, vehicle loading ramps, work platforms |
For most flooring, step covers and truck bodies in Vietnam, 3003 offers a good balance of strength, ease of bending and welding, and cost. Where the floor is outdoors near the sea or regularly wet with salt water, move up to 5052 or 5754: the UK distributor Aalco rates 5754 as highly resistant to corrosion, especially from seawater and industrial air, and strong enough for flooring. If the plate is part of a load-bearing structure, such as a forklift ramp, have an engineer check the load before settling on 6061-T6 and a thickness.
Every alloy is followed by a temper code. Two 3003 plates in different tempers can differ clearly in hardness and in how well they bend.
Buyers often ask for “3 mm plate”, but tread plate has two numbers: the base thickness of the flat part and the overall thickness including the pattern. Alumeco states that it measures thickness without the pattern height, so its “5/7” plate has a 5 mm base and a 2.0 mm pattern. If buyer and seller read the number differently, the plate delivered can be up to 2 mm thinner than expected.
How to avoid it:
