Aluminium sheet price, week 41/2026: SMM A00 drops to 23,650
Shanghai reopened after National Day with two down sessions: the SMM A00 aluminium in...
6061 Aluminum is a precipitation-hardened aluminum alloy, with Magnesium (Mg) and Silicon (Si) as its main alloying elements. Developed in 1935, 6061 has become one of the most versatile and popular aluminum alloys in the world. It is often called "structural aluminum" due to its excellent balance of properties: high strength, good corrosion resistance, weldability, and especially its superb machinability. For these reasons, 6061 aluminum is the top choice for structural applications ranging from aerospace, automotive, and construction to machine parts in precision engineering.

The combination of Magnesium and Silicon is the key to creating Mg₂Si precipitates, which allows 6061 aluminum to be heat-treatable (e.g., tempered to a T6 condition), a property that the 1xxx, 3xxx, or 5052 aluminum series do not have.
| Element | Minimum (%) | Maximum (%) |
|---|---|---|
| Magnesium (Mg) | 0.80 | 1.20 |
| Silicon (Si) | 0.40 | 0.80 |
| Copper (Cu) | 0.15 | 0.40 |
| Chromium (Cr) | 0.04 | 0.35 |
| Iron (Fe) | - | 0.70 |
| Aluminum (Al) | Balance | |
The mechanical properties of 6061 aluminum largely depend on its heat treatment condition (temper). Among them, the 6061-T6 temper is the most common and widely used due to its highest hardness and strength. You can learn more about these designations in our guide to aluminum grades.
| Temper | Tensile Strength (MPa) | Yield Strength (MPa) | Elongation (%) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 6061-O (Annealed) | ≤ 150 | ≤ 83 | 10 – 18% |
| 6061-T4 | ≥ 210 | ≥ 110 | 10 – 16% |
| 6061-T6 / T651 | ≥ 290 (Typically 310) | ≥ 240 (Typically 276) | 8 – 10% |
As you can see, from the annealed state (-O) to the highest strength temper (-T6), the strength of 6061 aluminum can more than double, clearly demonstrating the power of heat treatment technology.
6061 aluminum is highly regarded for its machinability, especially in the T6 temper. It allows for easy cutting, producing a good surface finish and well-formed chips, which saves time and cost in precision machine shops.
This alloy has good weldability using common methods like TIG or MIG welding. However, it should be noted that the heat-affected zone (HAZ) will lose some strength after welding (equivalent to a T4 temper). The part can be re-heat-treated after welding to restore its strength.
6061 aluminum is one of the most popular alloys for the extrusion process, allowing for the creation of complex cross-sectional profiles. It is also well-suited for hot forging to produce high-strength parts like wheels and crankshafts.
Thanks to its perfect balance of properties, 6061 aluminum is found everywhere:
6061 Aluminum is an extremely versatile alloy, providing the answer to most structural material challenges in engineering. It is the ideal choice when you need a material with high strength, good corrosion resistance, and excellent machinability and weldability at a reasonable cost. Especially in the 6061-T6 temper, it offers an outstanding strength-to-weight ratio that is difficult for other alloys in its class to match. This is why 6061 aluminum is trusted worldwide and is an indispensable material in any metal supplier's inventory.
