Aluminium sheet price, week 41/2026: SMM A00 drops to 23,650
Shanghai reopened after National Day with two down sessions: the SMM A00 aluminium in...
A6063 Aluminum is an alloy from the 6xxx series, with its two main alloying elements being Magnesium (Mg) and Silicon (Si). It is nicknamed "architectural aluminum" thanks to its perfect combination of moderate strength and superior fabrication properties. Unlike high-strength alloys such as 6061 aluminum, the design goal of A6063 is to optimize for the extrusion process, producing profiles with complex shapes, an extremely smooth surface finish, and excellent compatibility with the anodizing process.

This is the greatest advantage of A6063. It allows the metal to flow through complex extrusion dies with ease, creating profiles with intricate cross-sections that are difficult to achieve with harder alloys. This is why it is the standard material for window frames, doors, and curtain wall systems.
A6063 aluminum produces an extremely smooth and uniform surface after extrusion. This makes it the ideal material for the anodizing process, creating decorative and protective coatings that are highly aesthetic, available in diverse colors, and durable over time.
A6063 has good resistance to common atmospheric conditions and humid environments, helping outdoor architectural products maintain their beauty and long lifespan.
This alloy is easily welded using common methods like TIG and MIG, allowing for the easy fabrication of complex structural joints.
| Element | Percentage (%) | Role |
|---|---|---|
| Magnesium (Mg) | 0.45 – 0.9 | Forms Mg₂Si precipitates, enabling heat treatment (T5, T6) |
| Silicon (Si) | 0.2 – 0.6 | |
| Iron (Fe) | ≤ 0.35 | Controlled to ensure a beautiful surface after anodizing. |
| Aluminum (Al) | Balance | Base metal. |
The strength of A6063 aluminum depends on its heat treatment condition. The T5 (cooled from an elevated temperature shaping process and then artificially aged) and T6 (solution heat-treated and then artificially aged) tempers are the most common. To understand these designations better, you can refer to our guide to looking up aluminum grades.
| Property | Typical Value (A6063-T6) |
|---|---|
| Tensile Strength | ~ 190 – 240 MPa |
| Yield Strength | ~ 160 MPa |
| Hardness (Brinell) | ~ 73 HB |
| Density | 2.70 g/cm³ |
These are the two most common 6xxx series alloys, but they serve very different purposes. Making the wrong choice can lead to a product that fails to meet aesthetic requirements or lacks sufficient strength.
| Criteria | A6063 Aluminum (Aesthetics-Focused) | A6061 Aluminum (Strength-Focused) |
|---|---|---|
| Strength | Medium | Significantly Higher |
| Extrudability (Complex Shapes) | Excellent | Fair |
| Surface Quality & Anodizing | Very Good, smooth finish | Good |
| Weldability | Good | Very Good |
| Primary Application | Window frames, curtain walls, decorative profiles | Load-bearing structures, machine parts, vehicle frames |
In short: Choose A6063 when you need complex profiles and a perfect surface finish. Choose A6061 when your application demands higher load-bearing capacity and mechanical strength.
A6063 Aluminum is the irreplaceable choice for applications that prioritize aesthetics, complexity of shape, and surface quality. While not as strong as A6061, A6063 excels in extrudability and anodizing, making it a primary and essential material in the aluminum extrusion, architectural, and interior design industries.
