The global nickel market is facing a challenging period, grappling with a significant supply surplus coupled with weakening demand from key consuming industries. This imbalance has exerted considerable downward pressure on nickel prices, pushing them to multi-month lows on the London Metal Exchange (LME).

The primary driver of the supply glut is the massive increase in production from Indonesia. The country has ramped up its output of lower-grade nickel products such as nickel pig iron (NPI) and nickel matte, flooding the market. According to reports from reputable organizations like the International Nickel Study Group (INSG), the global nickel market is forecast to see a substantial surplus, potentially exceeding 200,000 tonnes this year. This production surge has fundamentally altered the global supply-demand balance.
While supply has been robust, nickel demand has shown signs of faltering. The two largest nickel-consuming sectors are facing their own headwinds:
The combination of oversupply and weak demand has caused LME nickel prices to fall consistently. Selling pressure from producers and hesitancy from buyers have created a distinct downward trend. Analysts suggest that until the supply surplus from Indonesia is absorbed and demand from the stainless steel and EV sectors recovers strongly, a sustainable price rally is unlikely. The market is expected to remain in a low-price environment for the foreseeable future.
