5052 Aluminum: O, H32 or H34, Bend Radius and Buying Mistakes
5052 aluminum sheet in O, H32 and H34 tempers differs clearly in strength, ductility...
The European Space Agency (ESA), together with industrial partners led by Airbus Defence & Space, has achieved a significant milestone in aerospace history: For the first time, a complete metal part has been 3D printed directly in Earth's orbit. This achievement opens a new era for in-space manufacturing and repair, reducing reliance on resupply missions from Earth.

The Metal 3D Printer Technology Demonstrator was installed by ESA astronaut Andreas Mogensen in the Columbus Module on the International Space Station (ISS) during the Huginn mission in early 2024. On August 7, 2024, the first product was completed, marking a significant leap forward from previous polymer printers.
For those interested in metal processing, the technical specifications of this project are incredibly impressive:
The project planned to print 4 specimens to test various characteristics:
This project is not just a technology demonstration but also solves a difficult logistics problem for long-term space missions. Carrying raw materials (metal wire) instead of tons of spare parts could reduce launch mass by up to 97.7%. This allows astronauts to manufacture any tool or component on-demand, paving the way for constructing large structures or recycling space debris in the future.
