September 30, 2025 – The Nội Bài – Lào Cai expressway, a vital transportation artery connecting Hanoi with the Northwest provinces, is entering a strategic upgrade phase. The project to expand the Yên Bái – Lào Cai segment from 2 to 4 lanes officially commences in October 2025, promising to alleviate congestion, enhance traffic safety, and significantly boost the socio-economic development of the region.
The Yên Bái – Lào Cai expansion project spans a total length of 121.33 km, extending from Km123+080 to Km244+155 on the existing expressway. This section, operational since 2014, currently features only 2 running lanes and 2 emergency stopping lanes, lacking a central median barrier. This configuration has led to significant safety concerns and limited traffic capacity as vehicle volumes have steadily increased.
Key components of the project include:
The total investment for the project is approximately 7,667.84 billion VND (equivalent to about 330 million USD, depending on exchange rates). Funding is sourced from 3,000 billion VND from the state budget, with the remainder coming from the Vietnam Expressway Corporation (VEC)'s own capital and mobilized funds. VEC is the lead entity responsible for project implementation.
The expansion of the Yên Bái – Lào Cai expressway holds immense strategic significance:
This project also exemplifies effective collaboration between state capital and corporate mobilization capabilities, demonstrating the Government's commitment to prioritizing transport infrastructure development.
As directed by the Prime Minister in Document No. 624/TTg-CN dated May 30, 2025, the project is expected to be substantially completed in 2026. This is a relatively rapid timeline for such a large-scale project, requiring close coordination among all stakeholders, from the investor and contractors to local regulatory bodies.
The main challenges could arise from ensuring construction quality within the tight timeframe, managing construction materials (such as aluminum sheets for auxiliary structures, signage, and guardrails), and land clearance (if additional issues arise). However, with VEC's experience and the close guidance from the Government, the project is expected to be completed on schedule and to high quality standards.
The Yên Bái – Lào Cai expressway expansion project represents a significant step forward in completing Vietnam's transportation infrastructure, particularly in the Northwest region. Upon completion, the route will not only substantially improve safety and transport efficiency but also unlock new economic development opportunities, contributing to the overall prosperity of the country.
