HO CHI MINH CITY, August 06, 2025 – The Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee has officially submitted a proposal to the Prime Minister for the construction of the Can Gio International Transshipment Port, a mega-project with an estimated total investment of VND 34 trillion (equivalent to $1.4 billion). The project is proposed by Saigon - Can Gio Port JSC, a joint venture involving Vingroup, with the ambition to transform Can Gio into a leading regional cargo transshipment hub.

The project is planned for the Phu Loi Islet area in Can Gio District, with a scope that includes a main port, a large-scale logistics center, and a non-tariff zone. According to the proposal, the port will be capable of accommodating the world's largest container ships, with tonnages of up to 250,000 DWT (equivalent to 24,000 TEUs). The port's designed capacity is projected to reach 16.9 million TEUs, enabling it to compete directly with major regional transshipment hubs like Singapore and Malaysia.
The project's location is considered highly strategic, situated on major international maritime routes and featuring a natural deep-water channel, which minimizes dredging and maintenance costs. The development of the Can Gio International Transshipment Port not only aims to attract major shipping lines and international transshipment cargo but also to create a powerful socio-economic driver for Ho Chi Minh City and the entire Southern Key Economic Region.
Currently, the proposal is awaiting the Prime Minister's approval for its inclusion in the Master Plan for the Development of Vietnam's Seaport System. If approved, this will be one of the largest seaport infrastructure projects ever undertaken in Vietnam, promising to elevate the nation's position on the global maritime map.
