Vedanta Welcomes Strategic Vision for India's Aluminium Sector

Vedanta Aluminium, India's largest producer of aluminium, has warmly welcomed the "Vision Document for the Indian Aluminium Sector". This crucial document, released by the Ministry of Mines, Government of India, outlines a strategic roadmap to make the nation's aluminium industry self-reliant (Aatmanirbhar) and contribute to the goal of a developed India (Viksit Bharat).

A Roadmap for Growth and Self-Reliance

The Vision Document proposes a comprehensive plan to unlock the immense potential of the Indian aluminium industry. The primary goal is to double the primary aluminium production capacity from the current 5 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) to 10 MTPA. This plan focuses not only on increasing output but also on boosting domestic consumption, enhancing exports, and ensuring sustainable growth.

Mr. John Slaven, CEO of Vedanta Aluminium, highlighted the document's significance: "The Vision Document is a transformative step, recognizing aluminium's strategic role in India's economic growth. We fully support the outlined objectives and are committed to working closely with the Government and stakeholders to turn this vision into reality."

The Role of Aluminium and Vedanta's Contribution

Aluminium is considered the "metal of the future" due to its superior properties such as being lightweight, durable, corrosion-resistant, and highly recyclable. The applications of aluminium are diverse, spanning critical sectors like energy, infrastructure, transportation, aerospace, and defence. Enhancing domestic production and usage of aluminium will help reduce import dependency and promote a circular economy.

Vedanta Aluminium currently contributes more than half of India's total aluminium production. The company produces a wide range of high-quality products, including aluminium plates, aluminium coils, and aluminium round bars, catering to numerous key industries. The company is also a leading producer of value-added aluminium products, including special aluminium alloys.

Towards a Sustainable Future

Mr. Rahul Sharma, President of the Aluminium Association of India and CEO – Aluminium Business, Vedanta Ltd, stated, "This vision will serve as a guiding light for the industry's growth over the next decade. By focusing on innovation, R&D, and sustainable practices, we can establish India as a global aluminium powerhouse."

The plan also emphasizes the importance of securing domestic raw material supply, particularly bauxite and coal, to support production expansion. The development of specific aluminium products like chequered plates for industrial applications and advanced alloys such as aluminium 6061 and aluminium 5052 will be key to enhancing the industry's value addition and competitiveness.
