Zurich, August 12, 2025 – Swiss investment bank UBS has reaffirmed its bullish stance on the copper market, maintaining its forecast for the metal's price to exceed $10,500 per metric ton by mid-2026. UBS's analytical report points to a combination of strong fundamental factors, including a deepening supply deficit and booming demand from high-tech sectors, as the primary drivers for this price surge.
This forecast comes amidst a volatile global metals market, yet copper is still regarded as one of the commodities with the most solid fundamentals. UBS analysts believe that even with short-term fluctuations, the long-term trend remains highly positive due to copper's indispensable role in the global economic transition.

The main driver behind this optimistic forecast is a significant imbalance between supply and demand. On the demand side, there are three main pillars:
1. Energy Transition: Global electrification, from electric vehicles (EVs) to renewable energy infrastructure (wind, solar) and grid upgrades, requires vast amounts of copper. Copper is dubbed ""the metal of electrification,"" and no other material offers a comparable level of efficiency.
2. AI and Data Center Boom: The explosive growth of artificial intelligence (AI) and the need to build large-scale data centers are creating a new wave of demand. These facilities consume large quantities of copper for wiring, busbars, and thermal management solutions.
3. Recovery of Traditional Industries: Demand from the construction and manufacturing sectors in Europe and the US is showing signs of recovery, adding a solid foundational layer of demand.
Meanwhile, the supply side is facing numerous challenges. UBS projects a market deficit of over 200,000 tons by 2025. Issues include operational disruptions at smelters, a multi-year lack of investment in new mines, and geopolitical risks in top copper-producing nations.
The convergence of soaring demand and a tightening supply creates a scenario for a sustained price rally for copper in the medium term. UBS predicts that prices could average $10,500/mt and potentially even touch $11,000/mt in 2026. This presents opportunities for investors in mining company stocks and copper-related ETFs.
For consuming industries, this outlook signals a period of high input material costs. Businesses will need to develop flexible procurement strategies and effective price risk management. Copper's critical role in future technologies once again underscores the importance of industrial metals, much like how aluminum is a material for modern and future industry. The copper market is expected to be one of the most noteworthy focal points in the commodities sector in the coming years.
