Lao Cai, October 02, 2025 – The expansion project of the Noi Bai – Lao Cai Expressway, specifically the section from Yen Bai to Lao Cai, has officially commenced, marking a significant milestone in upgrading Vietnam's vital transport infrastructure. With a total investment of 7,668 billion VND (approximately US$315 million), this project is not only aimed at alleviating congestion and enhancing traffic safety but is also expected to provide a strong impetus for the socio-economic development of the Northwest provinces, particularly Lao Cai and Yen Bai.
The existing section of the Noi Bai – Lao Cai Expressway from Yen Bai to Lao Cai (Km 123+080 to Km 244+155) currently features only two lanes without a central median, which has led to significant limitations in traffic capacity and increased risks of accidents. Since its completion in 2014, traffic volume on this route has grown beyond projections, especially heavy trucks transporting goods from the Lao Cai border gate. Frequent congestion has become a common issue, affecting transportation efficiency and road safety.
Expanding this section to four lanes, consistent with the already four-lane Noi Bai – Yen Bai segment, is an urgent requirement to meet traffic demands projected for 2027 and beyond. The project will not only improve connectivity but also reinforce the expressway's role as a crucial economic corridor, linking the northern mountainous provinces with Hanoi and major seaports.
The Yen Bai – Lao Cai expressway expansion project spans a total length of 121.33 km, from Km 123+080 (IC13 interchange) to Km 244+155 (IC18 interchange). Key components include:
The project owner is the Vietnam Expressway Corporation (VEC), an experienced entity in the construction and management of national key expressways.
The total investment for the project is 7,668 billion VND, sourced from various channels:
The project is scheduled to commence construction in 2025 and be substantially completed by 2026, in line with government directives. This is an ambitious timeline, requiring close coordination among all stakeholders to ensure quality and efficiency.
The expansion of the Yen Bai – Lao Cai Expressway brings profound strategic impacts:
Investors in the construction, logistics, and tourism sectors should closely monitor the project's progress to identify new business opportunities. A clear understanding of import procedures and regulations for construction materials and equipment will also be a key factor in adjusting business strategies in this dynamic market environment.
The Yen Bai – Lao Cai Expressway expansion project is a testament to Vietnam's commitment to investing in transport infrastructure to foster economic development and improve quality of life. With its substantial investment scale and strategic importance, this project promises to deliver immense benefits, contributing to the Northwest region becoming a new growth pole for the country.
