The copper market showed limited fluctuations today as investors remain cautious ahead of conflicting information, creating a less clear price trend.
The most actively traded copper contracts on the Shanghai Futures Exchange (SHFE) fell 0.16% to 78,890 yuan/ton, equivalent to 10,985.02 USD/ton. In contrast, copper prices on the London Metal Exchange (LME) rose 0.36% to 9,769 USD/ton.
The strong US Dollar continues to weigh on the basic metals market, making commodities priced in the greenback more expensive for buyers using other currencies. Traders are closely watching the potential interest rate cuts from the Federal Reserve (Fed). However, the expectation of stronger seasonal demand in China - the world's largest consumer - remains, providing support to red metals, which are widely used in construction and electrical sectors.
Data such as the manufacturing PMI index for the EU and the US, expected to be released on August 21, will continue to influence the market. Weaker numbers could increase fears of reduced demand, while any signs of growth could offer short-term support for copper prices.
Additonally, Benchmark Mineral Intelligence (BMI) reported that China’s refined copper imports remain weak due to price differentials between SHFE and LME. The price spread is expected to remain low as domestic copper production increases.
On the SHFE, aluminium prices fell by 0.22%, nickel by 0.37%, zinc by 0.69%, whereas lead rose 0.21% and tin rose 0.46%. On the LME, aluminium prices declined 0.48%, nickel lost 0.11%, zinc decreased 0.04%, while lead rose 0.66% and tin increased 0.68%.
While the copper market remains volatile, analysts emphasized the commitment from China to drive consumption as a positive factor. In general, the basic metals market must continue to monitor signals from the global economy and trade policies across countries.
