Algoma Steel Group Inc., based in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, has announced a significant leap forward in its production modernization: the successful start-up of its new Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) No. 1. The company achieved "first arc" on April 24, 2025, and successfully produced its "first steel" on May 10, 2025.
This event is not just a technical achievement but also a major milestone in Algoma's transition to EAF steelmaking. This process represents a pivotal shift towards more efficient and environmentally friendly production methods.
Michael Garcia, Algoma’s Chief Executive Officer, stated, "I am incredibly proud of the entire Algoma team for their dedication in achieving this critical milestone. Their tireless efforts have brought our vision to life. The start-up of the new EAF is a testament to our commitment to innovation and sustainability."

The new EAFs are designed to completely replace the company's existing blast furnace and basic oxygen steelmaking (BF-BOSP) facility. This strategic technological upgrade is key to the company's long-term vision.
This transformation is expected to reduce carbon emissions by approximately 70%, solidifying Algoma's position as one of North America's leading producers of green steel. This move aligns with a global trend towards sustainable materials and responsible manufacturing.
The project is on track for full commissioning in mid-2025. Once completed, the new facility will significantly enhance Algoma's production capacity and diversify its product mix of hot and cold rolled steel sheet and plate products, allowing the company to meet a wider range of customer demands.
The investment in EAF technology underscores Algoma's long-term commitment to sustainable development, technological innovation, and leadership in the future of the steel industry.
