Hung Yen province is on the verge of a historic infrastructure development milestone as it prepares to break ground on a mega-project: a road connecting cultural and tourism heritage sites along the Red River. With a total investment of up to 9.3 trillion VND (approx. $365 million USD), the project is not merely a transportation work but is expected to become a new growth driver, awakening the socio-economic potential of a riverside region rich in tradition but not yet developed to its full potential.
The project has a total length of nearly 56 km, passing through four districts and cities: Van Giang, Khoai Chau, Kim Dong, and Hung Yen City. The starting point connects to the Left Red River Dike in Xuan Quan commune (Van Giang), a strategic location adjacent to Hanoi's major metropolitan areas. The endpoint connects to the road linking Hung Yen and Thai Binh provinces.
The project's importance extends beyond the provincial level. It is a crucial link in forming an inter-provincial heritage axis, connecting major cultural and spiritual centers of Northern Vietnam, such as Thang Long (Hanoi) - Pho Hien (Hung Yen) - Tam Chuc (Ha Nam) - Bai Dinh (Ninh Binh) - Perfume Pagoda (Hanoi). The formation of this corridor will create an integrated and attractive tourism product, strongly promoting the smokeless industry for the entire Red River Delta region.
The project's implementation is predicted to create a multi-dimensional boost:
The scale of the project will demand a massive volume of materials for modern and future industries, from construction steel and cement to other advanced materials, opening up significant opportunities for suppliers in the sector.
According to the plan, the project will commence in 2025 and is scheduled for completion in 2027, with the main construction contract lasting 850 days. Currently, the Hung Yen Provincial Management Board for Transport Construction Investment Projects is urgently finalizing the last procedures, such as contractor selection and, crucially, site clearance.
The biggest challenge for the project is the extensive site clearance, affecting many households and agricultural lands. Furthermore, ensuring the construction quality of such a large-scale, technically complex project is another factor that requires strict supervision.
Conclusion: The heritage-connecting road along the Red River is not just an infrastructure project; it is a strategic move by Hung Yen to reposition its economic role within the Capital Region. If successfully implemented, the project will create a new, sustainable development space that harmonizes heritage preservation with modern economic growth.
